Mata Kalaladevi

Mata Kalaladevi, also known as Kalala Devi, is remembered in Jain tradition as the devout mother of Chavundaraya, a minister of the Western Ganga dynasty. Her strong wish to behold Bhagwan Bahubali inspired Chavundaraya to undertake the creation of the great Gommateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola. Carved from a single granite rock and standing about 57 feet tall, the statue was dedicated in 981 CE. It remains one of Jainism’s most cherished sacred monuments and a remarkable achievement of Indian art. Kalaladevi’s story celebrates how a mother’s faith helped inspire a lasting legacy of devotion.
